The build-up beneath your driveway

We dig out 250–300mm of existing ground, lay a geotextile membrane where the subgrade is clay or soft, then compact MOT Type 1 in 75–100mm layers with a heavy plate or roller. Getting this right is what stops the rutting, sinking and rocking blocks you see on cheap driveways. Everything above — the laying course, the surface, the edge restraints — is detail. The sub-base is the driveway.

Choosing a surface

Block paving is the all-rounder: strong, repairable and available in dozens of colours. Natural stone setts and porcelain paving give a higher-end, more architectural look for shorter drives and parking bays. Gravel over a stabilising grid is the most budget-friendly and is naturally permeable. We'll price two or three options on the same base spec so you can see exactly what the surface choice is costing you.

Access, kerbs and services

If you're creating a new access or widening one, the crossover on the pavement is council-controlled — we prepare the drawings and coordinate the dropped kerb application with your local highways team. While the ground is open we can also run armoured cable ducting for an EV charger, sleeve outside taps and lighting, and set manhole covers into recessed trays so they disappear into the paving pattern.

Timescales and what to expect

Most residential driveways take 5–10 working days. Days one and two are dig-out and muck-away — the noisiest, messiest part. Sub-base and edgings follow, then laying, cutting and compacting. We keep a walkable route to your front door throughout, sheet up where needed and sweep the road at the end of each day. You can drive on block paving the day after completion.
